Speculative speciation: artificial anagensis and creative cladogenesis
Over 160 bird species have gone extinct due to human pressures and activities. More than 1500 species are at risk of extinction. Not only are those extinctions profound losses in and of themselves, but they also represent devastating losses of what could have been. Would these species have diversified into many more different and wonderful forms increasing biodiversity?
Jacklyn Brickman and I explore this question in our collaborative art-science research. We tell stories of extinctions, merging data on lost species and artistic speculation about what we've lost.
